MATTAPOISETT — A 32-year-old Mattapoisett man has been sentenced to three years in state prison after pleading guilty to distributing fentanyl, officials say.

Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy J. Cruz announced Friday that John N. DeCosta pleaded guilty on Oct. 3 to two counts of distributing a Class B substance.

In July 2017, members of the Mattapoisett police investigated the distribution of fentanyl in the area and identified DeCosta as an individual who was providing the substance to customers, officials say.

Following the investigation, police arrested DeCosta on Oct. 4, 2017, in the parking lot of a 7-Eleven on Route 6 after he was seen selling drugs.

According to the DA’s office, police seized $2,093 in cash and a small bag of fentanyl from DeCosta.

Police later searched his residence and found $1,900 in cash, a digital scale, and several corner cut baggies for selling narcotics.
