Mattapoisett officials to be given healthcare option

MATTAPOISETT - Elected, compensated officials will soon be able to opt into the town’s healthcare plan – at their own cost.

School Committee member James Muse appeared before the Mattapoisett Board of Selectmen on Tuesday to request that elected officials are allowed access to the healthcare program if they’re willing to pay 100 percent of the premium.

“It’s one little thing that might help for any elected official,” Muse said.

Selectmen were on board.

“I don’t see a problem with it,” Select Chair Jordan Collyer said.

The board suggested having the town’s attorney draft a letter of agreement, just so officials who choose to take advantage of the program would know the parameters - namely, when their grace period ends if they should leave the position or fail to get re-elected.

“[The letter] would define who is eligible, and if you leave the position when you should convert from the insurance,” Collyer said.

The selectmen will vote on the agreement from the attorney at the next meeting.
