Mattapoisett Planning Board candidate Mary Crain

With wind and solar power bylaws to be written and a zoning ordinance to revise, Mattapoisett Planning Board candidate Mary Crain hopes voters will let her keep a seat she took over last June.

Crain, who moved to Mattapoisett with her husband Andy and two young children four years ago, was appointed to finish out Bob McNemara’s seat on the board after he stepped down.

“I thought it could be a good way to get to know the community better and serve the community,” she said.

Crain holds a masters in urban and regional planning from Rutgers University and spent more than 10 years working in town planning in Everett, Salem, and Watertown. When she saw the open seat on the board, she said it was a good way to keep up her skills and contribute her experience to Mattapoisett’s planning efforts.

Crain says she’s worked in almost every aspect of town planning in her career, including writing grants, working on school building projects, contributing to an open space and recreation plan, and responding to the public’s questions.

For Mattapoisett, she said, “I’d like to see that any kind of necessary development or growth be allowed within certain parameters – growth done cautiously and wisely.”

If Crain wins the seat over her opponent Paul Osenkowski, she said she looks forward to updating ordinances and helping the Planning Board get more involved in aspects of planning.

“I certainly enjoy it,” Crain said of her experience thus far with the board. “I’m looking for the best ways to help the town grow reasonably.”
