Mattapoisett Police Association summer concert and cruise-in draws crowd
The crowd, the cars, and the music in Shipyard Park could be heard throughout town during the Police Association’s summer concert Friday evening. The park and wharf were filled with people getting ice cream, walking around and chatting, or dancing to the music performed by GQ and The Lady.
Officer Mitch Suzan of the Mattapoisett Police Association said the annual event has been going on since 2000 and last year teamed up with the car show to draw more people.
“The Association does a fundraiser every year,” Suzan said, “and the proceeds go to putting on a free concert. Normally we have this later on in the summer, but the people love it. They love this band too.”
The summer kickoff concert also coincided with the Wharf Cruise Nights, held every first and third Friday of the month. Coordinator Don Lake though there were between 45 to 50 cars parked.
“It’s a small lot, so it looks a little crowded,” he said. “But tonight was a little light. A lot of times, they’re just packed in pretty tight.”
The Seaport Ice Cream Slip was also crowded throughout the night with hungry customers. Resident Paul Milott said he loves getting ice cream and attending events like this.
“I used to work in the automobile industry, so I enjoy seeing the old cars,” he said. “And it’s a friendly neighborhood crowd. People are interested in any activity going on around here.”
