Mattapoisett Recreation Committee is continuing its push to improve school recreation equipment while also adding new programming for the town.

Chair Jeremy Collier told the Mattapoisett School Committee on Monday that the group would like to purchase new basketball backboards and rims for Center School.

The cost for four perforated backboards is approximately $7,000. Collier would like to see the boards purchased and installed by the summer, and will seek funding from the town and private sources.

“It’s something that will last 20 years,” he said.

Collier also said Mattapoisett Recreation is planning a six-week summer program for kids, beginning June 24 at Center School.

“We want to try to keep it open to all tri-town residents,” he said.

In addition to Center School, Collier said, “We want to incorporate the library and Town Beach. It will be a kind of round robin and pick up three major town institutions.”

Collier also said the town’s Special Olympics program will return in April, as will space camp in the summer.
