Mattapoisett Recreation offers summer clinics
Mattapoisett Recreation will offer the following summer clinics:
The Shooting Stars Girls Instructional Basketball Clinic will be held July 18-22 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Old Hammondtown School Gym. The clinic is geared toward instructional level players in grades 3-5. It will focus on ball handling, passing, shooting, man-to-man defensive techniques, footwork, and gameplay. It will be directed by Julie Letourneau, a former division 2 basketball player who played professionally in Luxembourg and currently coaches with the Mattapoisett Recreation basketball program. The cost is $150. The sign-up deadline is July 12.
The Nature Explorers Program will be offered July 25-29 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., with an additional week possible August 1-5. Mattapoisett Recreation and the Marion Natural History Museum will explore the town's natural areas, including Ned’s Point Lighthouse, Aucoot Cove, the Mattapoisett River, along with various salt marshes, bogs, forests and Land Trust properties. Participants will visit with local aquaculture operators, the harbormaster, shellfish officer, and other local authorities. The program is directed by Elizabeth Leidhold of the Marion Natural History Museum and Mattapoisett’s conservation agent. The cost is $125. The deadline for sign-ups is July 6.
A Competitive Basketball Training Clinic will be held July 11-15, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Old Rochester Regional High School gymnasium. The clinic is for travel/AAU-level basketball players in grades 4-8. The clinic will be run by Brian Rudolph, a former division 1 basketball player at Loyola University, former Cabo Verde International Team point guard, and current New Bedford High School JV coach. The clinic will focus on ball handling, footwork, shooting, finishing moves, defensive techniques, conditioning, and basketball IQ. The cost is $150. The sign-up deadline is July 5. Space is limited to 26 players.
A Summer Conditioning Clinic will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays from July 12 to August 4 from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at Old Hammondtown School. The clinic is open to children in grades 4-6 and will focus on youth conditioning through speed, agility, strength, and power drills. Chad Cabeceiras, a physical education teacher in Mattapoisett and Bridgewater State graduate with degrees in exercise science and kinesiology, certified boxing fitness instructor, and youth nutrition specialist. The clinic costs $130. The deadline to sign up is July 5. Space is limited to 15 participants.
