Mattapoisett Recreation serves up new tennis court project
The Mattapoisett Recreation Committee is looking to repair the town’s public tennis court as well as build a new one.
The court, adjacent to Center School, has been in disrepair for several years, said Chair and Interim Director Jeremy Collier.
“It’s not on school property, but it directly affects the school,” said Collier. “It’s a natural barrier from the road for the kids.”
Collier said the state of the court is such that "there is really no rehabbing it."
"It's take down what you have there and put up new," he said.
Collier said it will cost over $100,000 to revamp the court, but there is not an exact figure yet. Mattapoisett Recreation plans to raise funds. This month, the board hopes to present its case before the Community Preservation Committee.
“We can see if that’s a viable option,” said Collier. “We’re definitely not going to ask the school system on this project.”
Collier’s long-term goal is to construct a tennis court on Old Hammondtown School’s property in the next three to five years.
“That’s a much more expensive project,” he said.
