Mattapoisett resident is Rochester's new Town Planner

Jan 15, 2014

Town officials hired Mattapoisett Planning Board member Mary Crain as the next Town Planner on Tuesday night.

From 1994 to 2007, Crain worked in planning departments for the Massachusetts cities of Everett, Salem and Watertown. She has a graduate degree in planning from Rutgers University.

Selectmen and the Planning Board interviewed six people during the hiring process. Officials said Crain’s background was impressive, and they also complimented her demeanor.

“After listening to you speak you seem to have everything under control,” said Planning Board member Mike Murphy.

In Watertown, Crain supported the city’s planning department.

“I shepherded and ushered in any projects that had to do with zoning through to completion,” Crain said. She also prepared proposals, fielded questions from the public and wrote staff reports.

Crain left the Watertown position six years ago and moved to Mattapoisett with her husband to raise their two children. In 2013, she won a seat on the town’s Planning Board. It was Mattapoisett Town Administrator Mike Gagne who told her about the Rochester opening.

“I wanted to put my skills and talents back to work,” she said.

Board member Gary Florindo asked Crain if she was familiar with the town. As a Planning Board member she became immersed in issues that challenge small towns, such as Rochester.

“That helped me segue into a more rural experience instead of the intensely urban communities I worked in,” she said.

Crain takes over the part-time position from John Charbonneau, who resigned in September.

Selectmen and the Planning Board voted unanimously to hire her. In the coming days, Town Administrator Rich LaCamera and a subcommittee of Planning Board members and Selectmen will draft a contract for Crain to sign.
