Mattapoisett road repairs result in cleaner town beach

Cars aren’t the only things that have benefitted from road repairs in Mattapoisett village.

According to Highway Surveyor Barry Denham, drainage added to North Street has also improved the water quality at Town Beach.

“The water quality is the best it has ever been,” said Denham who got the good word from Mattapoisett Department of Health agent Dale Barrows. “Between the sewer rehabilitation this year and drainage rehabilitation, we seem to be seeing some positive results.”

In addition to the drainage, road repairs this summer included paving North Street and Barstow Street and putting in new sidewalks, which cost about $700,000.

“It leaves us with a $70,000 balance in the road budget going forward,” said Denham.

He added that, since the Highway Department did some of the roadwork rather than hiring contractors for all of it, he was able to save approximately $35,000.

Denham said he hopes to get around $200,000 at the Spring Town Meeting as well as state funding of $228,000 to continue repairs in 2013.
