Mattapoisett school budget loses two new teaching positions

Mattapoisett School Committee Chair James Higgins wanted two new teachers to be added to Center School for the coming school year, but those positions are on hold to make way for a leaner budget.

On Monday, Superintendent Doug White said several big ticket items were removed from the first budget draft, bringing the current proposal to $6,201,946 – almost $110,000 more than the current budget.

Approximately $424,000 was shaved off the first draft of the budget.

Higgins had pushed for the new teachers to keep the class sizes at or below 20 students in next year’s kindergarten and second grade.

“Those two teachers had to be backed out of the budget,” Higgins said. But “All hope is not lost.”

The school will receive $15,000 for out of district students, and funding from the state could be higher, depending on the outcome of the state budget.

In the meantime, a part-time reading specialist will not be bumped up to a full-time position, which was also in the first budget.

White also said $50,000 for new curriculum purchases was removed from the budget. Instead, “We’re going to ask the town to support our curriculum purchase through the capital plan,” explained White.

If town officials agree, the curriculum would be voted on as part of the town’s capital plan improvements at Annual Town Meeting.

White said services for students with disabilities were rearranged, resulting in an additional $240,000 reduction to the budget.

White stressed that the new budget would not change students’ education.

“No one is receiving any less services because of what we’re talking about,” White said.

The new budget number is also more likely to get approval from town officials, who already informed the committee that there is only $300,000 for budget increases across all town departments.
