Mattapoisett Select Board mulls Ned’s Point Road parking restrictions

MATTAPOISETT — The Mattapoisett Select Board decided during an Aug. 3 meeting to send a safety inspector to Ned’s Point Road in order to assess the danger posed there by parking issues.

The main issues discussed by the board were the bottleneck created by cars parking on both sides of the road and the stakes placed at the edges of the roadway by residents to deter parking on their lawns.

Select Board Member Tyler Macallister said that he recently tried to use the road and found it blocked by a landscaping contractor on one side and a home remodeling crew on the other.

“It was creating a serious bottleneck,” he said. “It was very difficult to get through there.”

Select Board Member Jordan Collyer agreed that the parking was creating an issue for both cars and pedestrians who are pushed into walking down the middle of the road, sometimes into oncoming traffic.

“Even the shoulders of the road aren’t great to walk on,” he said.

The Select Board agreed that they would need to consider making one side of the road a no parking zone, but wanted to get a report from the safety inspector before moving forward.

The board was also concerned about stakes placed on the edges of the roadways by residents trying to deter people from parking on their lawns.

Collyer said that the stakes were on public property as they were placed on what is technically part of the roadway and he was concerned that someone might fall on one and hurt themselves.

“We really don’t want somebody getting impaled,” he said.

The board agreed to have the safety inspector take a look at the stakes while he was inspecting the parking problem with any further decisions on the matter postponed until after a report could be made.
