Mattapoisett Selectmen approve proposed Route 6 car dealership
While some of the finer details still need to be ironed out, plans for a used car dealership and auto repair shop at 79 Marion Road are moving forward.
At Tuesday night’s Selectmen meeting, David and Kevin Ducharme returned for the second half of a hearing regarding an auto sales and service license. Selectmen approved the license pending further review by the zoning enforcement officer.
The board agreed during the Oct.13 meeting that the shop’s parking lot would need to be inspected by the police safety officer. Because the dealership would be located near a hill on a high-speed road, drivers may be faced with a dangerous blind spot when exiting the shop.
The Ducharmes said the property was inspected last week, and police officer Justin King took measurements of the parking lot. David Ducharme said the group came up with several ideas for the layout of the lot. Town Administrator Michael Gagne said the plans would have to be presented to the zoning enforcement officer.
Before the license was approved, Selectmen reiterated that they didn’t want to see giant waving flags, banners or balloons along the street. The group didn’t want to see distracting, flashing lights along Route 6 either.
“It’s a pretty low-key area,” said Selectmen Tyler Macallister.
He also said, “The number of cars is subject to final approval by the code enforcement officer not to exceed twenty-five for-sale cars.”
Selectmen Jordan Collyer said the shop would house no less than 15 vehicles. He said the minimum number of parking spaces was set at 15 because a precedent was set in the past with the prior business at the location, Jay’s Auto.
Next, the zoning code enforcement officer will have to approve the plans for the dealership.
