Mattapoisett Selectmen discuss Taylor Seafood aquaculture safety issues

Feb 29, 2012

Following concerns raised by recreational boaters over the “poorly” marked perimeter of Taylor Seafood’s aquaculture farm, the Mattapoisett Board of Selectmen have asked for revisions to the operation to address lines, buoy placement and equipment-use.

During the February 28 meeting, Selectman Jordan Collyer said the concerns with the aquaculture operation, located off the shores of Mattapoisett, is whether some of the perimeter lines can become entangled in the propellers of the boats.

This, he said, is potentially hazardous to boaters.

“Even experienced boaters could find themselves in trouble in certain conditions and that the issue needs to be resolved,” Collyer said.

Robert Taylor, owner of Taylor Seafood, said that his aquaculture operation, where Cape Cod Bay scallops are raised, is carefully looked after.

“We mark our perimeter line with a white buoy every 40 feet, and the line is anchored every 80 feet,” Taylor said.

“It is possible for someone to cut a line without our immediate knowledge, but we make every effort to keep our lines from straying beyond the perimeter and causing further issue. We have come a long way in the time that we have been working here in these waters.”

Selectman Tyler Macallister suggested Taylor use non-floating lines wherever applicable.

“Non-polypropolene lines may be helpful,” he said. “The use of sink lines rather than those that float may reduce the likelihood of an issue for those that come too close to the buoys.”

The Selectmen have asked that Taylor meet with the Harbormaster, Horace Field, to set forth firm details of the operation to remain in compliance with the aquaculture rules and regulations.

The board members said that Taylor will need to determine where he will be placing his buoys and perimeter lines, as well as what type of equipment will be used.

The Marine Advisory Board members have volunteered to take part in the oversight of details regarding proper markings and locations of waterway buoys.
