Mattapoisett snow fund still in the black

Feb 11, 2015

Mattapoisett is probably one of few towns in the area that has not exceeded its snow budget…yet. Of the $69,000 appropriated to deal with snow and ice, the town has approximately $15,000 left.

Mike Gagne reported the numbers at the Selectmen’s Tuesday night meeting.

He said the blizzard cost almost $30,000. The town submitted a request for $19,700 of that to Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency for reimbursement and is waiting for a response.

Gagne thanked town departments, local citizens and businesses for helping out during the storm, calling it a “very good cooperative effort.”

Selectman Tyler Macallister also commended the Highway Department for halting plowing during peak hours of the storm when it would have been like “trying to hold back the tide with a teaspoon.”

As for the snow budget, in the likely event that it does go into deficit, the Finance Committee will be consulted and money from Free Cash set aside to prevent any funding issues down the road.
