Art filled the halls of Center School on Wednesday afternoon for an exhibition of artwork by Mattapoisett elementary students.

This year, Old Hammondtown and Center School art teacher Greta Anderson had students write short artist statements for the pieces they chose to display.

“I just wanted them to share an idea behind the artwork...get them to talk about the idea,” she said.

Some kids were more wordy, others kept their descriptions concise.

At the event, first grader Patrick Henry chose to show his painting of trees, and he had this to say about his art: “Sometimes you experiment. OK that will be it!”

Preschool through sixth graders took part in the exhibit with self portraits, woven textiles, superheros and even paintings using a homemade brush.

The latter, by two siblings who live and study on Cuttyhunk Island, is part of a continued partnership with Old Hammondtown School students. Carter and Gwen Lynch began working on projects and presentations with their Mattapoisett peers last year. This year Anderson got to work with the students on an art project, which they painted using homemade brushes of cat hair.

“This was the first time we've been able to collaborate on an art [project],” said Anderson. “They're such nice kids. It's been a pleasure to have them join us.”

The Lynches came to the mainland to see the exhibit. Many families also attended the annual event.
