Mattapoisett students have strong scores on MCAS, PARCC

Dec 15, 2015

Mattapoisett elementary students continued to score well on standardized test last year with high numbers on both the MCAS and PARCC exams.

Fifth graders took the MCAS exam for science, a subject not covered under the newer PARCC exam. Students in grades three to six took PARCC in English language arts and math.

For science, 72 percent of students scored in the advanced or proficient category, 22 percent above the state average. Assistant Principal Kevin Tavares said one area of concern is that numbers in the needs improvement category have been static.

“We have a population of kids who are stuck in that needs improvement category,” he said.

As soon as the state decides which science standards to enforce, Tavares said the faculty will look for ways to move students into the proficient and advanced categories.

Regarding PARCC, students scored 49 percent or more in levels 4 and 5 for every exam and at each grade level. For ELA, grades five and six saw 81 percent and 84 percent, respectively. High percentages were also found among grades five and six on the math exam at 75 percent and 79 percent, respectively.

Additionally there were no students in grades four to six who scored in level 1, the lowest level.

Students will again take PARCC this school year, but the test will be replaced by a hybrid of MCAS and PARCC in 2017.
