Mattapoisett Track Club to kickoff June 23
The Mattapoisett Track Club has been around since the early 1970s, promoting track and field and a healthy lifestyle. This year the nonprofit organization will host its summer program June 23 to Aug 6.
The club offers instruction, conditioning and organized competitions. Children as young as three are welcome into the club and may choose any event that interest them.
Practices are held at the Old Rochester Regional High School track, named after one of the club’s founders, Mudgie Travers, on Monday and Wednesday evenings between the hours 6 and 8 p.m. The program for three- and four-year-old kids is an abbreviated session and ends at 7:30 p.m.
The track club’s staff consists of high school and college athletes who are skilled in the events they are coaching. They offer instruction in hurdles, discus, shot, javelin, long jump, distance running, sprints and starts. Staff members with childcare as well as track experience oversee the three- and four-year-olds.
Two meets are held each summer. Meet competition is divided by both age and sex. First through sixth place awards as well as honorable mention ribbons in each event and category are given. Every member has the opportunity to compete at his or her own level. Due to the large number of participants and events, meets run on both Monday and Wednesday nights.
The membership fee is $50, which defrays the cost of shirts, awards, equipment, supplies and coaches. Board members are all non-paid volunteers. There is no additional fee for meets.
