Mattapoisett's scallop population highest since 2008
Mar 13, 2013
Forget fish, this year Mattapoisett has plenty of scallops in the sea.
Mattapoisett officials may extend scallop season after receiving information from the Department of Marine Fisheries that the population remains high.
Town Administrator Mike Gagne said Gregory Sawyer, an Aquatic Biologist with DMF, recently assessed local scallops.
“Based on the data they’ve collected, it’s clear that the scallop population has continued to be strong,” said Gagne. “It looks like they will give us authorization on continuation through the end of April.”
Gagne said the last time there were this many scallops was 2008.
Selectmen will further discuss extending the season and vote on it at the board’s next meeting on Tuesday, March 26.
