Mattaposiett's snow and ice removal fund wiped out by winter storms
This winter’s snow storms have taken a toll on Mattapoisett’s snow and ice removal fund.
“I received word today from our Town Accountant that we have in fact reached our snow and ice removal appropriation from our Town Meeting,” Town Administrator Mike Gagne said at Tuesday’s Selectmen meeting.
Additional storms from the “perpetual winter of February and March” will put the fund in a deficit, he said.
Gagne said he will sit down with the Finance Committee to look at an article for Town Meeting on how to offset the costs for both Hurricane Sandy and February’s blizzard.
While a 75 percent reimbursement is expected from the Federal Emergency Management Agency for costs the town incurred during Sandy, Gagne said the amount of aid for the blizzard is still unknown.
“I’m just a little concerned if there will be enough in reserve," he said.
The town did raise the snow and ice removal budget in 2012, and Gagne said, “It’s been somewhat debated what the snow and ice removal budget should be set at, and whether or not they should be increasing snow and ice abatement appropriations.”
State and federal aid reimbursements are rarely received until after the fiscal year has passed, said Gagne. Consequently, the reimbursements are put into the town’s Free Cash fund.
Resident Paul Osenkowski said he would like to see a stabilization fund created with reimbursements.
Vice-chair Tyler Macallister agreed that was a great idea, but said legally the money has to go into Free Cash first. Gagne added that the town does not use money from Free Cash to fund deficits in operational budgets.
