MCAS scores lack growth at Old Rochester Regional

Nov 10, 2011

MATTAPOISETT — Old Rochester Regional High School principal Michael Devoll says MCAS scores are high but show little development.

Devoll presented the 2011 MCAS results at the Nov. 9 school committee meeting during which he discussed the areas the students need work on.

For instance, the reports show that in 2011 81 percent of the students scored advanced or proficient in biology .

This is higher than the 58 percent who did the same in 2007.

However, when compared with math, 86 percent scored high in 2011, which is the same figure from 2007.

Devoll said that he, as well as the rest of the staff, will be in touch with other districts to see how they can improve in the classroom and how to address the issues some of the students may be having. He added that he will be holding student interventions in order to offer additional help.

On Thursday, Nov. 10, teachers from the Old Rochester Regional school district took part in a Galileo Assessment seminar.

During this seminar the teachers and memebrs of the school’s administration worked on creating two MCAS level tests for students to take in December.

The Galileo system is an online management tool for teachers, which is used for improving classroom instruction.

The Galileo Assessment tests taken in December will mirror the MCAS tests, and provide the school with feedback on the students’ work.

Devoll said that he is confident that these tests will pin point the problem areas for the students, as well as alert the staff of which students are not prepared for the state test.

“This will give us a little more so we can prescriptively see where they need work,” Devoll said.

The results of the tests, Devoll said, will be discussed at the school committee’s meeting in January.
