Medical marijuana district established
One voter questioned the creation of a medical marijuana overlay district, which passed easily at Monday night’s Special Town Meeting.
The zoning change restricts medical marijuana operations to the adult entertainment district, located in the northern part of Rochester near SEMASS.
Before the vote Rick Cusolito asked about zoning bylaws regarding standard pharmacies. According to the town, those businesses would be limited to a general commercial zone.
“How is a medical marijuana facility different than a standard pharmacy?” he asked.
“It potentially isn’t different than a pharmacy,” Planning Board Chair Arnie Johnson said.
The Planning Board unanimously supported the creation of the overlay district after public hearings held this summer. Johnson said a marijuana facility developer could apply for a variance from the Zoning Board of Appeals if they wanted to open elsewhere.
