"Men Who Cook" a roaring success

Shipyard Park’s big, white tent could be smelled from all over town. The culprit: Men Who Cook, a two-hour charity event hosted by The Women’s Center in New Bedford. Up to 20 chefs were cooking, serving or preparing dishes like mussels marinara, pulled chicken sliders and lobster mac ‘n cheese. Tickets sold out quick, leaving many without reserved tickets waiting in a line that stretched almost to Water Street.

Despite this and the fear of running out of food, the Center’s executive director, Pamela MacLeod-Lima was excited for the results.

“It was fantastic,” she said. “A huge, roaring success. People were great about it, said they had a great meal and most importantly they knew they were helping a great cause.”

The event, which has been held around the area for more than 20 years, uses the proceeds for the Center’s programs and services. The Lions Club was also there selling raffle tickets for Harbor Days, which Men Who Cook helped kick off.

Brothers Andy and Dan Perrone cooked and served mussels marina to hungry guests.

“I just love the event and seeing the people enjoy the food,” Dan said. “It gives us a chance to show what we can cook.”

Andy agreed. “It’s for a great cause, and I love food,” he said.

Mattapoisett residents Barby and Ed McGloin loved the whole thing.

“It was to die for,” Barby said. “We always go to thing for Harbor Days. This was the best yet. All the men who cooked were great. Great food by the water.”
