More snow fall increases deficit spending in Rochester
Snow removal spending has generated a $121,472 deficit, and there are additional bills to be tallied.
“As you can imagine, every town and city, including the state of Massachusetts, is grappling with excessive debt due to this atrocious winter,” Town Administrator Mike McCue said.
On Monday, he told Selectmen that deficit would grow following last weekend’s snowfall.
The town initially budgeted $68,000 for snow removal. So far, approximately $189,000 has been spent. Cities and towns are allowed to deficit spend for the snow and ice removal budget line item.
McCue said it’s possible the federal government may award funds to offset the cost. But that money likely won’t be available for some time.
“I don’t think that’s something we’ll experience this fiscal year,” McCue said.
