'My Favorite Things' combines 'eclectic' musical tastes

Nov 19, 2012

For out-of-state college students, Thanksgiving can be a good time to reconnect with hometown friends and family.

At least that's the motivation behind the Tri-County Music Association's plans to host its second annual holiday concert, "My Favorite Things," this Friday at Tabor Academy.

"My Favorite Things" will welcome back past recipients of the association's scholarship program.

With most of the musicians away at school, having the concert the day after Thanksgiving will make it more convenient for the kids to participate, said Phil Sanborn, the association's music director.

The students will each perform a musical selection of his or her own choice, which can make for a diverse show, Sanborn said.

"The music is all over the board," Sanborn said. "Everything from Shubert to jazz and classical. It's really an eclectic mix."

As for the pressure of performing, Sanborn said the participants have done a great job at preparing their selections for the concert.

"The kids look forward to it," Sanborn said. "They can play in front of a hometown audience, which a lot of them don't get to do because they are away."

The concert will commence at 7 p.m. at the Lyndon South Auditorium at Tabor Academy.

Tickets are $20 and are available at The Symphony Music Shop in Dartmouth, The Bookstall in Marion, and at the door. All proceeds will go towards the Tri-County Music Association.
