New barrels trash Mattapoisett's charm

Feb 20, 2015

To the Editor:

It is a quaint and historic village by the sea. Once famous for shipbuilding during the 19th century era of the whaling industry, Mattapoisett later became popular as a summer place for Bostonians and beyond. Antique houses from the early 1800s still make up most of the village.

Out of the blue, a couple of weeks ago, huge and hideous pairs of trash barrels appeared at every household in town. These trash bins are way too big for most houses to store out of sight; hence, a walk around town now is a visual assault. These enormous plastic trash and recycle containers, one with an orange top, are everywhere, unattractive and dominating the landscape, despoiling the charm of the village.

It appears that the ABC trash company has made this change to the pick up service for their own convenience without any input from or consultation with the residents, who are the persons most effected by this cumbersome eyesore. And whose taxes pay for service.

Our friends at Town Hall must have noticed this trashing of our village, and I hope they will take action to correct the situation and give us back our attractive and familiar home.
