New handbook prohibits e-cigarettes, changes unexcused absence policy
The Old Rochester Regional School Committee approved several revisions to the 2016 high school handbook on Wednesday.
The changes include a prohibition against e-cigarettes as part of the no smoking policy on campus.
“These things are becoming much more prevalent in schools. I took one off a student,” said ORR High School Asst. Principal Mike Parker. “They’re very dangerous so we want to see them out of the school.”
The policy for excused absences is also changing. Students are allowed nine unexcused absences throughout the year, but to excuse an absence they have to bring a note from a parent or doctor. Going forward, students must submit a doctor’s note for excused absences.
Students will also have to stay in school for the full day of the junior semi-formal, rather than leaving early to get ready. Otherwise they will be prohibited from attending the dance.
“Past history reveals massive amounts of dismissals on this day, disrupting the educational process,” said Parker.
The final handbook changes makes possession of pornography, including sexting, a category one offense at the school.
Sexting has become more prevalent at the school, Parker said.
The committee unanimously approved the changes.
