Next fall a new 5K may be running through Mattapoisett to raise money for the “Healing Little Hearts Foundation.”

Started in 2007, the foundation raises money for cardiac research at Boston Children’s Hospital.

Kelly Weglowski, who started the foundation with her husband Marc after their own son was born with a severe heart defect, said, “We started doing an annual black tie gala at the Whaling Museum. Last March we broke the half million point."

Wegloswski said the 5K would help the foundation branch out and raise more for research.

“We want to make it annual. I think it would be a good thing for the community and certainly a good thing for these kids,” she said.

Weglowski and friend Kathleen Leclair said they hope to schedule the new 5K, which will start at Center School, for the Columbus Day holiday weekend in October 2013.

Selectmen authorized the foundation to move forward with their plans.
