New parent-teacher-student group begins at ORR

The new Parent Teacher Student Organization at Old Rochester Regional received approval from the ORR School Committee to hold its first fundraiser.

On Wednesday night, PTSO members Theresa Fitzpatrick and Renée Pothier explained that the new organization is looking to become a registered nonprofit, but that will take some seed money.

The first fundraiser, OK’d by the School Committee, is with Bay State Textiles. Bins will be placed at tri-town schools where fabric can be donated, from old socks to stuffed toys, and recycled.

Periodically, Bay State Textiles will send a rebate check to the PTSO based on the amount of donations.

The PTSO is still in the setup phase, but Fitzpatrick said eventually there will be a more clear plan. The group will support programs at the school and encourage volunteerism.

“We like the emphasis on volunteerism and having the kids be able to help their own school, so we’re planning on working with the students to promote this and hopefully all of our projects,” Fitzpatrick said.

ORR Junior High Principal Kevin Brogioli said such organizations are strong at the elementary level but drop off once students get to secondary school. He praised the new group.

“We’re appreciative of that effort to help programs that aren’t in our budget. It will be very helpful down the road,” he said.
