New plans shown for $2.6 million Marion pump station

Jun 24, 2021

MARION — Kent Nichols of Weston and Sampson, an engineering firm, updated the Water Commissioners on plans for a Creek Road wastewater pump station on June 24.

The plans show the pump station would be largely obscured by a line of trees. The existing station, located in a Federal Emergency Management Agency 100-year flood zone, is less than 50 feet from the shoreline, and serves around 50% of Marion.

The new station would be built just in front of the old station, and elevated on stilts. In addition, the ground the station would sit on would be raised to bring the station above the flood zone.

“It’s kind of like a forest station,” Select Board member and Water Commissioner John Waterman said.

Nichols said the new station would be “highly resilient,” and is designed for flood conditions up to the year 2080.

The project is expected to cost $2.62 million. The town will apply for grant funding for the project, including a FEMA grant program for which the town would need to match 25% of the project cost or about $655,000.

Town Administrator Jay McGrail said the town has that money “on hand,” which he hoped would help the town’s application.

Construction on the project is currently expected to last one year, starting December 2022.
