New sleigh adds holiday cheer to Mattapoisett

If Santa needs any backup on Christmas Eve, he’s sure to look no further than the Mattapoisett Town Hall where a freshly spiffed up sleigh sits ready for a late night reindeer flight.

The sleigh, donated by Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Bodges, is the latest addition to the town’s holiday decorations.

“We’re absolutely thrilled,” said Melody Pacheco, assistant to the Town Administrator and coordinator of Holiday in the Park.

The Bodges, who now spend most of their year in Florida, called Pacheco this summer to ask if the sleigh could be of use to the town. The homemade wooden sleigh with wrought iron blades had stood on the Bodges’ Ship Street lawn for years.

The town was happy to accept the gift and Pacheco’s husband and nephew revamped it with new paint. Pacheco finished it off with presents and a bow.

She said the Bodges’ children and grandchildren still live in town and hoped they would be happy to see the sleigh on display.

“We truly thank the Bodges, and I’m sure that they’ll enjoy it along with their grandchildren,” said Pacheco. “It’s really quite the piece.”
