New Year's polar bears to take a dip for needy families

Dec 20, 2012

There’s one way to get over a New Year’s Eve hangover – jump into Mattapoisett Harbor. Of course, there are other ways, but they’re unlikely to help families in need.

That’s where Freezin’ for a Reason comes in.

Will and Michelle Huggins began the New Year’s Day polar bear dip to support South Coast families dealing with cancer.

“It’s for the forgotten costs associated with it – healthcare, gas, etc,” said Michelle, who is working with the Acushnet-based B.A.M. Foundation, Inc. for the event.

The cause hits close to home for the Huggins family. Will has battled two bouts of cancer. Medical bills and frequent hospital bills on top of caring for two young children and being self-employed took a toll on the family’s finances.

In response, friends in the area initiated several fundraisers for the Huggins. They were also on the receiving end of financial assistance from the B.A.M. Foundation.

While Will finishes his treatment, Michelle said they wanted to find a way to help other families.

“We want to pay it forward because everyone has cared for our family so much. We’re always looking for ways to give back,” Michelle said.

To promote the icy plunge, Michelle created a Facebook page. So far, 50 people have signed up to take the dip.

Michelle said the event will raise funds by asking each swimmer to make a donation. Sperry Tents also donated a heated tent where polar bears can warm up and friends and family can purchase snacks that benefit the cause.

Michelle is calling in help from local businesses as well as several girls who will decorate cupcakes to sell.

“Even if you don’t want to plunge, buy a cupcake and hot chocolate to support it,” said Michelle.

Freezin’ for a Reason will take place at 12 p.m. on New Year’s Day at the Mattapoisett Town Beach. Donations can also be sent to the BAM Foundation, Inc., P.O.Box 30185, Acushnet, MA.02743
