No decision yet on Elizabeth Taber’s pipe

Jan 16, 2019

MARION — The Celebrate Elizabeth Taber Committee met on Tuesday to discuss a Marion Board of Health request to depict the Marion benefactress without her pipe in a statue they plan to erect. However they did not reach a decision on Jan. 15.

Committee chair Judy Rosbe said that the group wishes to continue the discussion, and does not want to go public with any decision at this time.

The statue will be placed across from Marion Town House near Sippican School by 2020. The Board of Health had raised concerns that seeing the historical figure holding the pipe would encourage students to smoke.

The request has sparked a debate about historical accuracy, and has prompted numerous comments from the public.

This week, Jim DuBois, of West Wareham, wrote to Sippican Week to add his opinion, stating, “If we modify depictions of the past to conform to current norms we are truly on a ‘slippery slope.’ Keep the pipe.”
