North Street section to be paved
One section of North Street will be getting its final paving, according to water and sewer department superintendent Nick Nicholson. The section of North Street just north of Route 6 will see work Tuesday, August 16 and will last four days.
“The group doing the pavement work can do it all in three straight days,” Nicholson said. “Of course, that’s assuming it won’t rain. And the weather is always changing around here.”
Work on North Street started mid-May as the water and sewer department handled the replacement of what Nicholson said was an outdated sewer line. Temporary paving was done early July.
Resident Mike Chaplain, who lives close to the intersection of North Street and Route 6, said he was glad to see the work getting done ‘before the snow flies.’
“We were affected a little bit when they did the initial cut,” he said. “They did discover we and a few houses were on a spur, as opposed to a main line, so there was additional construction. It’s going to be a nuisance when they shut down the road for a day while they pave. But the finished product is pretty good.”
Final paving for the lower part of North Street won’t happen until the highway department completes its storm water drainage system. Nicholson did not believe that project would be over until the fall or next spring.
Highway department surveyor Barry Denham said they are still waiting for design and plan review.
