Old Colony grads told to fight fear of failure

Jun 2, 2013

Old Colony valedictorian Jordan Frey acknowledged the difficulties that await his classmates following graduation. Speaking at the regional vocational high school’s commencement on Sunday afternoon, Frey said his peers would be ready for that test.

“We are a generation in the midst of great challenges, but it's how we stand up and overcome these challenges, that will define our future,” Frey said.

Diplomas were awarded to 130 graduating seniors at the ceremony, held outdoors at Oliveira Field.

Frey, of Rochester, also charged classmates to push past the fear of failure.

“We must not be afraid of failure. For if we are afraid of failing we will not take the necessary risks required to reach our goals,” Frey said.

The class salutatorian was Frey's sister, Amanda. In fact, a third member of the family, Andrew, also graduated that day. The three are triplets who all ranked high academically at Old Colony.

Kasandra Gonet, senior class vice president, served as the master of ceremonies. In addition to Frey, senior class president John Pina offered welcoming remarks and spoke last.

Katherine Taylor and Alyssa Pacheo, senior class secretary and treasurer respectively, presented the class gift, which was funding to be used for the installation of security cameras around the high school.

Superintendent Director Gary Brown accepted the gift.

School Committee Chair Augusto Costa handed out the diplomas alongside faculty, administrators and School Committee members.
