Old Colony record-breaker Amanda Frey seeks continued soccer glory

Sixteen-year-old Amanda Frey has a lot to live up to as a senior at Old Colony Regional Vocational Technical High School.

She is studying healthcare, has aspirations of becoming a nurse, plays on the varsity basketball team and also happens to the school’s soccer star.

A Rochester resident, Frey is a record-breaker when it comes to goal scoring.

In fact, Frey has beaten the school’s record for individual players scoring goals three times over, said Old Colony Athletic Director Matt Trahan.

“She’s sitting on 65 goals,” Trahan said. “She’s eclipsed the record which is in the low 20’s.”

And she isn’t done yet. Frey, who is just kicking off her last year at Old Colony, has one more season to get a few more goals in the net.

Shattering school records aside, Frey said her love of the game is simple – she just wants to play.

“I like the fast pace, the ball skills and the feeling you get when you score,” Frey said.

She has been kicking a soccer ball around the field since she was three-years-old. It’s kind of a family thing, she said. Frey is a triplet and her two brothers also play varsity soccer for Old Colony.

Frey said she would like to play soccer in college, but she isn't sure where she wants to go to school quite yet.

The girls team is good, but it could be better she said. As one of the team’s three captains, Frey said she wants to see better communication.

“I like to help the kids and get them going with a routine,” she said. “I want to make sure they know how to do all of the drills.”

Along with the team’s two other captains, Frey has been leading practices for the girls all summer.

Having been on the team for three years, Frey said she has quite a few favorite moments on the field. In one game against Holbrook a few years back, she scored the winning goal in sudden death overtime.

“I was really excited and just surprised,” Frey said.

With its first game Tuesday, the team is ready for continued victory, she said. Before taking the field, Frey said she has a routine that has served her well in the past.

“We warm-up before the game for an hour,” she said. “Before the game starts I have a handshake with the our two other captains. It works for us.”
