Three students from the graphic arts department at Old Colony Regional Vocational Technical High School were among the winners of the 2014 Massachusetts Marine Educators and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary art competition.

The contest theme was “Amazing Ocean Creatures of Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary” and the students competed against nearly 800 entries.

The winning artwork will become part of a traveling exhibit that will tour the region this summer and will also become part of a calendar that will be published on the website.

The winners are Deanna Longo of Lakeville who received second place for her piece “Bluefin Tuna” and Morgan Furtado of Acushnet took sixth place for her piece, “Ocean Sunfish.” A student also placed sixth place for her piece “Tentacles” but has requested to be placed on the school’s non-published list.

The following students won honorable mentions: Brenna Cote of Acushnet, Aimee Hill of Mattapoisett, Marissa Marchado of Freetown and Alex Raymond of Acushnet.

Longo won $30 and two tickets to the New England Aquarium.

The artwork can be viewed on the Sanctuary’s website at stellwagen.noaa.gov.
