Old Colony students take take home awards at SkillsUSA state competition
Old Colony Regional Vocational Technical High School students brought home one gold, three silver and one bronze medal when they attended the 40th annual SkillsUSA state competition in Marlborough on May 2.
SkillsUSA’s mission is to empower its members to become world-class workers and responsible American citizens.
Gary Brown, superintendent-director for Old Colony, received an Honorary Life Member Award from SkillsUSA. Brown is retiring from Old Colony on June 30 after 30 years of service at Old Colony.
Old Colony students competed against 2,500 students from 45 schools in 86 occupational areas and leadership events.
Owen Letourneau from Freetown came home with the gold medal in electronics technology. Letourneau will travel to Kansas City, Missouri to compete in the National SkillsUSA convention in June.
Earning silver medals were Shane Westgate of Freetown in precision machine and Jordan Rosetti of Carver in advertising design. The third silver medal winner asked that their name be withheld.
Bringing home a bronze medal was the web design team of Chad Underhill of Rochester and Darren Pimental of Acushnet.
Norman L’Heureux of Freetown and a junior in CAD drafting at Old Colony qualified at the district competition to be a state officer elect and was among the 21 candidates who took park in the election of 10 state officers during the SkillsUSA.
Seventeen Old Colony students qualified to compete in the state SkillsUSA competition after winning 10 gold, six silver and one bronze medal in the SkillsUSA District Competition held in New Bedford on February 28.
Founded in 1965, SkillsUSA has approximately 15,000 school chapters in 54 states and is a national nonprofit student organization that serves students enrolled in career and technical education training programs in public schools and colleges.
