The Old Rochester School Committee approved a request from the senior class to hold its senior prom at Belle Mer on Goat Island in Newport, Rhode Island.

Old Rochester High School Principal Mike Devoll said that the school has held its prom at the venue before and feels confident using it again, despite its out-of-state location.

“This is a place that we’re very familiar with and comfortable with,” he said.

Prom is scheduled to be held on Tuesday, May 31, just before graduation.

A representative from the senior class said that they were aiming to keep ticket prices below $100 each, and OR School Committee Member Jim Muse sought assurances from Devoll that finances won’t be an impediment to anyone who wants to attend the dance.

“If there is need, I’m sure you know there are people who would be glad to help,” he said.
