WORCESTER — An Old Rochester Regional High School boys basketball player is no longer on the team after spitting at an opposing player during a Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association tournament game.

The incident occurred during Old Rochester’s semifinal game against Pittsfield High School in the MIAA Div. 3 tournament on Monday, March 11, which the Bulldogs won 82-72.

After a Pittsfield lay-up, an Old Rochester player spit on a Pittsfield player as both ran back up the court. The Pittsfield player received a foul for shoving the Old Rochester player immediately after the incident.

Then, a post-game confrontation between players emerged as the two teams shook hands, and police officers on site at Worcester State University intervened. Fans of the two teams also exchanged words as players were brought back to their respective locker rooms.

After an investigation, Old Rochester Regional School District administration confirmed the incident, according to a statement released Wednesday, March 13 and attributed to Old Rochester Regional School District Superintendent Michael Nelson, principal Michael Devoll, athletic director Christopher Carrig and varsity boys basketball coach Steve Carvalho.

“Old Rochester Regional High School has identified the player involved,” the statement said. “He is no longer a member of the Old Rochester Boys Varsity Basketball Team and has since taken responsibility for his actions.”

According to the statement, Old Rochester has been in contact with Pittsfield school administration and reported the matter to the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association.

The Old Rochester statement said the school district and administration expresses “our deepest regrets to the Pittsfield team and school community at large.”

The MIAA said in its own statement it “has been made aware of an incident at a boys’ basketball tournament game between Old Rochester Regional High School and Pittsfield High School.”

“The MIAA continues to serve as a resource to its member schools as they navigate the facts of the matter at the local level,” the statement said.

Pittsfield High School drafted a letter regarding the incident to be sent to the MIAA, according to the Berkshire Eagle.

Old Rochester principal Michael Devoll, Pittsfield superintendent Joseph Curtis and Pittsfield High School principal Maggie Harrington-Esko could not be reached for comment Wednesday.
