Old Rochester explores advertising to raise funds
MATTAPOISETT — The Old Rochester Regional School District’s athletic department is exploring on-campus and digital advertising as an additional source of revenue to make facility improvements affordable.
In an effort to increase the budget for the Old Rochester Regional High School athletic department, advertisements will be placed around campus and will be added to HUDL, a service used by Bulldog teams to break down film and showcase high school sports highlights and games.
Through partnering with HUDL to use their digital advertising package, the high school will be able to live stream 150 to 200 games of all programs and levels each year, according to Athletic Director Chris Carrig.
The Old Rochester Regional District School Committee unanimously approved advertising rates proposed Thursday, Oct. 10 by Carrig.
“We’re in desperate need of money for our facilities, and I think this could be a venue for that,” said school committee member Matthew Monteiro.
Repairs to bleachers, weight room improvements and gymnasium wall padding replacements are among projects that would be first addressed, according to Carrig.
Carrig said that the athletic department made approximately $184,000 in player fees, $60,000 in fundraisers and $35,000 in ticket sales last school year.
Those totals are “enough to break even” and cover basic operating costs, not including salaries, according to Carrig.
He said another stream of revenue is needed if the department wants to “advance the state of things” by making facility improvements.
“I'd like to leverage what we have as an existing policy to create tasteful opportunities to generate a little bit of income to improve the student athlete experience,” said Carrig.
Current school district policy stipulates that advertising must benefit the school district and be carried out in a responsible manner.
Revenue generated would be held in a gift account and dispersed as needed for campus improvements and other discretionary spending in the athletic department.
On campus advertising will include signs of different sizes ranging in costs from $500 to $1500 will be posted around the athletic facility areas.
Lastly, 4-by-6 foot signs at a $1500 yearly cost will be placed on tennis court fencing. These signs will not impede viewing tennis matches, said Carrig.
Businesses will have to pay for the cost of the physical sign as well.
“There are already Tri-Town businesses advertising in other communities,” said Carrig. “It would be nice if we could give them a place to do so at home.”
On the digital side, businesses will be able to advertise in a number of different ways on HUDL’s broadcasts of Old Rochester sporting events.
The athletic department will receive two cameras from HUDL to assist with the broadcast of on campus sporting events.
“I think it's a win-win,” said school committee member Joe Pires. “I think it's a win for what you’re trying to do to raise funds, and I think it's a win for businesses.”
Carrig said he plans to reach out to potential advertisers by mail or social media campaigns.
