Old Rochester handily wins powderpuff game
WAREHAM — Old Rochester Regional High School ran to victory Wednesday, Nov. 27 in the annual powderpuff game against Wareham High School.
The Bulldogs won 36-8 in the girls flag football game traditionally played before Thanksgiving. Old Rochester had last won the yearly matchup against Wareham in 2021.
“It was really fun,” senior Gianna Deleo said.
Senior Caroline Brogioli, who scored multiple touchdowns, said Old Rochester’s strategy was to run the ball.
“We didn’t want to throw it,” she said. “We tried it a couple times. It didn't work. We just wanted to run because we know that we were fast.”
Old Rochester also returned an interception for a touchdown near the end of the first half of the game, played on a crisp fall afternoon under a cloudless sky at Wareham’s Spillane Field.
“There also wasn’t just one person who was doing it all,” Brogioli said. Everyone was doing everything on offense and defense.”
The powderpuff team practiced during the week leading up to and the Monday before the game, according to Deleo and Brogioli.
“Most of us didn’t really know what we were doing, so it was just funny,” Deleo said.
Brogioli also said the team was “figuring it out as we go.”
“It was fun,” Brogioli said. “A lot of us play sports too so it made it a lot easier.”
