Old Rochester Regional senior athlete named to All-American team
Old Rochester Regional boys soccer player Jonathan Zucco has added another award to his impressive resume: Being named to the National Soccer Coaches of America Scholastic All American East team.
Jon started the season as an outside midfield for the Bulldogs but, after a 3-2-1 start by the team, was moved to forward. Jon became one of the league's premier forwards leading the team in total points, scoring 13 goals while dishing out 16 assists.
Zucco was selected to the South Coast League All Stars, the Standard Times Super Team and the Massachusetts State All Star first team this year as well. He was also invited to play in the high school showcase game for college scouts and coaches to analyze and rate players.
"It was a surprise to me," Zucco said. "I'm honored, and it feels great being named to the team."
Zucco said he was considering soccer at the college level, but has not made any commitments yet. He has applied to major in engineering.
"Jon is a leader who doesn't have to say much," Head Coach Erich Carroll said. "He's an unselfish player. Most of the time he's looking to set up a teammate for the goal, and his energy and enthusiasm for the sport is clear."
Carroll said Zucco was one of five other Massachusetts athletes considered.
Soccer achievements are the most important part of the team selection, according to coach John Sullivan. In order to be a Scholar All-American, the nominated player must be an outstanding player and be recognized fot it. At a minimum, the player must have been recognized locally. In most cases, a player must be named All-State to receive the award.
To be nominated, a student-athlete must:
• Have exhibited excellence in high school soccer
• Have at least a 3.75 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) throughout his/her career;
• Be nominated by his/her high school head coach, who must be a current NSCAA member who is registered at the high school level;
• Be a graduating senior during the 2011-2012 academic year
Zucco joins 21 other players from Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York and Ohio.
"His example is that you work hard on the soccer field and hard in the classroom," Carrol said. "This is a well-rounded honor, one of the best. It's fantastic."
