Old Rochester takes win against Wareham in league basketball game

MATTAPOISETT — The Old Rochester Regional High School Bulldogs didn’t let up for a second during a South Coast Conference League basketball game against Wareham on Monday, Feb. 13.

Old Rochester Regional High School basketball coach Steve Carvalho put it best.

“It’s ORR versus Wareham. Anything can happen at any time.” And what happened was a decisive 71-59 win for the Bulldogs against the Wareham Vikings.

This is the Bulldogs’ tenth win in a row and their first win against Wareham this season.

“We’re really rolling right now,” said Old Rochester Player Liam Geraghty.

In December, the Bulldogs just barely lost to Wareham in a tight game that went into overtime.

“They got us earlier in the year,” said Geraghty. “So to get them back in our home gym in this atmosphere is great.”

But the Vikings didn’t let the Bulldogs win without a fight. At the end of the first period both teams were tied up, 16-16.

That didn’t last long as a series of smart plays and skillful shots brought the Bulldogs into a 35-27 lead by the end of the first half.

“We talked about being resilient and strong mentally and I’m glad the kids responded,” said Carvalho.

Part of that mental strength may have come from the Bulldogs’ fans cheering from the bleachers. The Dog Pound also gave Wareham players some pointers with chants of “you can’t do that” whenever they fouled.

In the final quarter of the game Old Rochester players widened their lead with a series of well executed free throws that moved the Bulldogs score even further from Wareham.

Now, the Bulldogs prepare for a non-league game against Dartmouth’s Bishop Stang High School on Feb. 15 and a league game against Apponequet Regional High School on Feb. 17.

“I think [this win] will harden us up, toughen us up going into the postseason,” said Carvalho.
