Old Rochester track teams prepare for championships
Asking the Old Rochester Regional track seniors about the teams’ weak points is like pulling teeth.
And with good reason too, seeing how both the boys’ and girls’ teams are undefeated and on the verge of South Coast Conference and state championships.
“We’re doing surprisingly well,” says Rochester resident Cayla Johnston. “We’re coming off of another great season and we’ve kept that momentum.”
Mattapoisett resident Matt Vicino agrees.
“Our long distance runners are good, our sprinters are good, and we’re just well- rounded,” he says. “We’re a smart team and always pushing each other.”
The coaches, of course—being coaches—say there’s always room for improvement. Boys’ coach Bill Tilden agrees that this season is going strong, but the team could use some depth.
“There’s always room for depth,” he says. “Sometimes we lean too much on too few athletes. Speed is always a scarcity too. Finding the right kids for the tasks can always be tricky.”
Girls’ coach Cindy Tilden said the team has stayed hungry all season long, but the hardest part will be keeping that energy.
“We’ve got some important meets ahead of us,” she says. “The next five weeks will be crucial. We’re a young team, but we’re performing well each time. We just have to stay motivated.”
The Bulldogs still have conference meets against Fairhaven, Wareham and Seekonk.
So, what do the teams attribute to their success? Family.
“We all have really strong bonds,” Johnston says. “We look out for each other. The coaches are close with us, and we can always go to them with anything. Having that is important.”
To tweak the old phrase: The family that plays together, wins together.
