Oliver! brings musical to Art Center stage
It's already sold out but the Marion Art Center's production of “Oliver!” is likely to bring musicals center stage more often.
“It's been a long-time since the Marion Art Center had a musical,” said Director Jamie Wiksten. “I couldn't think of a more fitting production to do.”
The Broadway musical “Oliver!” is based on Charles Dickens' classic book about an orphan who escapes from an orphanage.
The MAC production has 25 cast members who range in age from 9 to almost 90, including one actress, Joan Prescott, who acted in the first production at the center's theater. Among the other actors are Sippican School student Nolan Gibbons as Oliver, Tom Giammalvo as the criminal Fagin, Eddie Gonet as the Artful Doger who leads a gang of pickpockets and Richard Brosky as Fagin's minion Bill Sikes.
Brosky, a South Dartmouth resident, said Sikes was a part he's long wanted to play, and he's enjoyed his first experience on the MAC stage. Working with Wiksten has been a highlight, and Sikes said she was receptive to the cast's suggestions.
“It made it not just hers but ours,” he said.
The progress of the kids in the musical has been impressive as well, Brosky said.
“They have come so far and are going to make the show great,” he said. “I'd just like to commend them.”
Tickets sold out fast for the Nov. 3-6 production, which is a good sign for musicals to come.
“I'm sure this is just the beginning,” Wiksten said.
