Opening Day at Center School

When it comes to peanuts and Cracker Jacks, Maria Tomon's students know how to get their cash back.

On Monday, Tomon's second grade Center School class celebrated her annual baseball themed Opening Day, an annual tradition. Kids wore their Red Sox best and tested newly learned math skills in "Tomon Stadium."

"They're taking the math that we've learned into a real life situation," said Tomon.

Each student received $6 which they had to budget in the various games. Kids got to purchase two items at the concession stand with two students acting as cashiers and two as customers.

In another area, students calculated souvenirs and practiced making change.

The activities come after students learned to count money in Tomon's class. This year, with a new math curriculum and the adoption of the Common Core, students are more able to do the tasks without as much help from parent teachers as they needed in previous years, said Tomon.

"These kids were very ready to move onto this event," said Tomon. "They're doing it very independently."

With Red Sox and Yankees logos across the room, the event also showed Tomon's Long Island roots.

But she said, "I still like going to Fenway."
