Opinion: On the safety of Marion’s Converse Road

Apr 26, 2024

To the editor:

On Easter Sunday, before we sat down for our Easter meal, I almost lost my daughter and infant granddaughter. My daughter was walking carefully with her 7-month-old baby girl in a stroller along Converse Road. She heard a car coming from behind so she moved as far over to the side as she could. And then, she was hit. By some huge miracle, she was hit only by the side mirror and was able to keep control of the stroller. She was bruised and badly shaken as you may imagine. We spent the rest of the day in various stages of shock, relief and gratitude that mother and child were not killed or severely injured.

Marion is a wonderful place to live in a world that can feel chaotic and unsafe. We pride ourselves in having an excellent school system and a place where families and children are nurtured, supported and loved. We are a community of people who embrace the outdoors, walking and running along our streets. And yet, one of the three longest, most densely populated and most traveled roads in Marion is unquestionably unsafe. I have lived here on and off for most of my life and it has always been thus. It is now and always has been undeniably treacherous for walkers and runners.

A few inches were all that saved me from losing my daughter and granddaughter that day.

What will it take for this situation to change?

Respectfully,

Susannah Davis
