ORR athlete Abby Offringa a triple threat
Shin splints are one of the few things that slow down Abby Offringa. The senior Old Rochester Regional High School student is a force to be reckoned with in field hockey, basketball, and tennis, but she’s not all about the show.
“I’m the type of person who needs exercise,” said Offringa. “If I’m not active, I’m not happy or that nice.”
Offringa has played all three sports since her freshmen year, but started learning basketball and tennis as a kid.
“I was homeschooled when I was younger and we would always make sure we got exercise. That’s how I got introduced,” said Offringa.
The Rochester native picked up field hockey in junior high.
Offringa excelled in all three sports, becoming a captain in basketball and tennis.
“Every season the girls are awesome,” said Offringa.
A plus to having three teams is that “it helps me to be a good leader and to see that everyone is different,” she said.
Appreciating those differences goes hand in hand with Offringa’s team philosophy.
“I’d rather have other people succeed and do well rather than myself. I care about winning, but I’d rather assist than score the points,” said Offringa, who was sidelined in basketball last year due to shin splints.
Offringa recovered in time to hit the tennis court in the spring and hasn’t stopped since.
From giving the occasional pep talk to doling out a kick in the rear for sluggish players, Offringa said, “I like being able to help younger generations get established for the future teams.”
And while she’s enjoyed her time at ORR, Offringa answers “yes” without hesitation when asked if she’s ready for a change of scenery.
Ranked in the top 10 percent of her class, the center midfielder/point guard/first singles athlete is looking forward to college.
“I want to go down south, North Carolina or Texas,” said Offringa, who plans to major in exercise science or chemistry.
How sports will figure into her next four years is still to be determined.
“I figure my classes will be intensive,” she said. “If I do play anywhere, I’d be more of a walk-on or just having fun and do a club sport.”
