ORR classes compete in Olympic showdown
All four classes took part in an epic battle of scooter races, doughnut eating and Pictionary at ORR’s 2016 Class Olympics on Friday.
The winning class – the seniors – won a cash prize of $100, an ice cream social and a trophy to display in the school’s trophy case.
After the participants followed the torch-bearing bulldog around the gym, Principal Mike Devoll announced the first event, Pictionary. ORR’s version was a 60-second art contest.
Emil Assing, voted “most artistic,” represented the senior class, along with German exchange student Nils Sunderhoef and Earl Miranda. The trio claimed victory after the judges declared Assing’s portrait of teacher Geoff White, “most realistic.”
In the second round, one student from each class was given 30 seconds to make as many three point baskets as possible. Sophomore Jason Damascus scored an untouchable eight three-pointers while junior Sophia “So Fire” Church scored two. Basketball player and senior Jon O’Conner managed four baskets. The victory went to the sophomores.
Seniors Zoe Smith and Aibhlin Fitzpatrick were the first pair to crack their egg in the third event, the egg toss. The junior class took the win after senior Brady Fien dropped his egg after a pass.
The seniors redeemed themselves in the doughnut eating contest after Sunderhoef consumed an entire Ma’s Doughnut in less than 20 seconds. He proved his determination by continuing to eat the doughnut off the ground after it had fallen from the string.
The juniors took another win in the musical chairs event, thanks to Ariane Dias. Dias, who won the musical chairs category last year, aggressively defended her title from sophomore Katlyn Kutash.
The games wrapped up with the combination of relay races: the scooter race, the wheelbarrow race and the three legged race. While juniors Will Hopkins and John Breault gave a good effort in the three legged race, seniors Nina Bourgeois and Emily Josephson completed the race without fault.
Devoll announced the senior class as the overall champions of the 2016 Class Olympics and awarded the trophy to class President Bailey Sweet and Vice-President Nina Bourgeois.
