ORR cross country runs to divisional championship
After placing first at the South Coast Girls Cross Country Championship, Old Rochester Regional High School made a decent showing at the Eastern Massachusetts Divisional Cross Country Championships on Saturday.
“After we leave the SCC competition, it really gets tough,” said Coach Cindy Tilden.
Tilden took a total of 14 athletes from the girls’ and boys’ teams to the competition where ORR competed against other Division 5 teams.
Of the girls’ team, Tilden said, “They’ve had a good season. They’re undefeated SCC champs for the second year.”
Tilden said the boy’s team has improved throughout the season.
“At this point in the season, we’re stronger than we were last year. I’m hoping we squeeze in for the fourth spot,” she said.
Tilden said she has been trying to keep students motivated through the long cross country season as well as prepare them for harder courses.
With a relatively flat ground to practice their 3.1-mile runs, Tilden said one challenge has been trying to get in enough challenging runs for harder courses like the division championship at the Wrentham Developmental Center.
“Wrentham is hilly,” said Tilden. “We’ve tried to prep for hills. We’ve only got one and it’s not very steep.”
At the competition, Mike Wyman placed third and Nick Pacheco seventeenth, qualifying them to move on to the All-State meet; however, both decided to forego the competition and rest before indoor track season on November 26, said Tilden.
The girl’s team finished in eighteenth place.
